By the change in his tone and the way he shifted about in his seat, Leo could tell that his last statements had made Director Jameson more than a little bit uncomfortable.
“Leo,” he started in, “We have absolutely nothing on radar or sat-cam showing what hit Janson in Earthbound. It was like, one second everything was fine, and the next, it was yesterday’s beer can. If what you are saying is true, then this ‘escapee’ is not only horrendously strong, but it’s undetectable as well.”
It was evident to Shrike at this point that the very idea of such a thing troubled the director much more than he was willing to admit.
“We haven’t been able to decrypt all of the data you recovered as of yet- in fact, we’re only at about 35 percent, or thereabouts. But from the hypothetical projection for GECCO’s estimates, I’d have to agree- there’s no way it would be a one-man job. Not even a one tank job, for that matter. To bring something like that in- or more likely, down, we’d need a team- a team of battle-tested veterans, with nothing but top-of-the line marks. Alpha Squad is already on a mission- just left this morning. With what’s at stake on their current mission, we can’t call ‘em back- so it’ll have to wait. Fortunately, there hasn’t been anything in the news about this creature yet- so let’s hope its reverted to it’s inner child and is running through the fields picking daisies. Dang it, this whole thing is giving me a headache…”
“When we get to the point where we can interview the refugees you evac’ed, we’ll be sure to check with this ‘fox’ lady. As it is, the Biomed-techs are having enough trouble just attending to their medical needs. In the meanwhile, I guess all we can do is wait.”
Jameson cleared his throat before continuing.
“Shrike, your mission objectives were clear. Not only did you complete your mission despite last-second, unexpected changes, you also managed to save the lives of several people including that of your partner, and bring back more intel on the Directorate’s plans and machinations in one night than several other agents have gathered in a month. I’m afraid, therefore, I am left with no other choice than to give you a commendation and a promotion, for a job well done. For now, however, go ahead and take some time off- take a vacation, hit the beach or something- just check with Susan and she can get everything arranged for you for hotel and transportation on our expense. One of the ‘perks’ that comes along with risking your butt out there. Keep your phone turned on, though- I may need you if we get a lead on this critter or if something else comes up.
Well, that’s all I’ve got for now- if you don’t have any further questions, I’d say this debriefing is adjurned!”
