Powers: Deirdre is both a mutant and a “Neo-Druidic” mystic of the “Old Ways.” The Druids emerged from the ancient Celtic tribes, at a time when the people had to live close to nature to survive.
Druids filled the roles of judge, doctor, diviner, mage, mystic, and clerical scholar - they were the religious intelligentsia of their culture. Deirdre – by virtue of her Irish mother and Scottish father – has inherited the powers, responsibilities, and virtues of her Druidic heritage and birth-blood; however, she incorporates some of the elemental and philosophical beliefs/practices of Wiccans and other modern Pagans. As a result, she calls herself a “Neo-Druid” or “New Druid”.
Mutation – Deirdre’s mutant ability is the power of the Fifth Element. According to Neo-Pagan and Neo-Druidic beliefs, there are four elements within the world – Earth, Fire, Water, and Earth. Usually, an Elemental mystic can only manipulate one particular element, which usually corresponds with their Birth Sign (i.e., a person born as a Taurus – an “Earth Sign”, would usually only be able to manipulate/draw power from the Earth). But Deirdre’s Sign is Pisces – the last Sign of the Zodiac, a Water Sign that incorporates many of the best/worst aspects of the entire Zodiac, making it a “mutable Sign” capable of drawing power from any one Element. As a result, Deirdre is a “Fifth Elemental” – a rare, mystic-type of mutant that can manipulate any of the four other Elements.
Mystical Abilities – Deirdre’s mystical powers are closely related to her own mutation – the result of careful breeding for centuries of Druidic power and hereditary powers. But she does have mystical powers not related to her own genetic mutations – she is a post-cognitive. Given enough time around a certain person or in a certain place and she can start to tell things about the past of that individual or location. She can also communicate with ghosts – usually those found in historic sites or those who have died a sudden death and are seeking vengeance.
Equipment: A set of Scottish dirks inherited from her father (Fire); a pentacle necklace with a moonstone moon-shaped center (Soul); a thick oaken bo-staff engraved with pentacles and runes (Earth); a crossbow (Air); a horn-shaped water-skein inlaid with shell pieces and mother-of-pearl (Water).
History: Deirdre has a relatively normal past and upbringing. Her father, mother, two sisters and four brothers are completely “mundane” and the members of her family haven’t had a spark of magickal/Druidic power in them for generations. However, that’s not to say that her family hasn’t followed the teachings, philosophies, and life-styles of the “Old Ways” down through the “skipped” generations.
When Deirdre was born, her grandmother immediately recognized the power and potential held within her granddaughter. There was much rejoicing in the family and even though Deirdre was the youngest of her siblings, she was always showered with plenty of attention and care by the rest of her family. She was taken to be an understudy of a prominent Druid leader in the Highlands when she turned ten and received an eclectic (but thorough) education in all things mundane and magickal.
When she turned thirteen, the family moved from the Isle of Man to Edinburgh, which was closer to where Deirdre was staying with her tutor during traditional “school months”. It became easier to visit her family on weekends and on holiday – and life began to assume a relatively normal life for her, nothing much different from her peers who went to out-of-city boarding schools. But Deirdre was born an adventurer – the kind of girl hell-bent on making life on her own and in her own way. As she grew into adolescence, she become more dissatisfied with the way things were and longed for a life of her own, away from the clustered confines of her noisy family and the rigorous demands of her tutor.
Come fifteen, Deirdre rebelled against her family and their beliefs. She longed to be “normal” – to be an ordinary teenager unbound by tradition, magick, and responsibility. She refused to accept her powers as a Fifth Element and told herself that it was all in head – that it had nothing to do with her genetics or heritage. She ran away from her family and her tutor, to take to the Scottish roads and wander as she wished. What Deirdre didn’t realize was she could never escape her heritage or her powers – they would keep following her anyway.
At the age of sixteen, somewhere between Edinburgh and Glasgow, Deirdre met a dashing young “rogue” who turned her head and her heart. Even though he was several years older than her (a college student and definite playboy), she decided to cast her lot with him and travel along at his heels. This was perhaps the one defining decision in Deirdre’s life – both the worst and the best. Just three months after turning sixteen, she became pregnant with her companion’s son. She confronted him with this news, when she slowly started realizing that she was pregnant and that her “boyfriend” was cheating on her with other women.
On March 30th, 2000, Deirdre gave birth to Solan, her young son. Solan was the turning-point in Deirdre’s life. While she has yet to truly accept her fate as a Druidic Fifth Elemental, she realizes that there is something to be found in the beauty and power of her family’s beliefs. She finished her extensive tutoring and while she is by no means a master in the Elements of Air and Fire (which prevents her, for now, in become a Soul Master – capable of mastering all Elements to the point of combining them all into one pure Element), she is a master of Water and Earth and a woman to be feared in most situations.
She is also a master knife-thrower/fighter, an expert archer (though no good at all with a gun) and has perfected the art of Oriental bo-staff fighting (a style of martial arts blended together by her own grandfather, father, and tutor). For now, she has no set job (and works part-time as a ghost tour guide for Auld Reekie’s Edinburgh Ghost Tours and part-time as a bartender), but is seeking for some chance to use her Druidic powers without being an object of fear and loathing. Most importantly, Deirdre keeps going in order to make a life and a future for her young Solan – everything she does is with him in mind. Her mother’s instincts run strong and she will do anything for the sake of her own – for her son, her family, and for what luck few she will accept/trust as friends.
Physical Description: Deirdre is an unusual woman in many respects – not least of all, for her height. At 6’2” she’s tall for most women, but it’s offset by her many “curves.” Deirdre is a naturally voluptuous woman – big-chest, big-hipped, big-boned, with a natural “hour-glass figure.” Most of her weight comes from muscle, though – despite her curvy figure, Deirdre is in excellent shape (after all, the Druids were warriors as well as scholars and her family has seen to it that she follows her heritage as closely as possible).
At one time, she had long, wavy red hair down to the small of her back, but Solan found too much delight in pulling at it through his stages of growth, so Deirdre found it easier to cut it. She now sports a cute-sort of layered hair-style that’s long enough to touch the top of her spine, but layered short enough to stay off of the top of her ears. Her hair parts in a quirky sort of cowlick that frames both sides of her face – to some, this is Deirdre’s most endearing feature. To her, it’s a bloody nuisance.
In true Scottish fashion, she has freckles all over her nose and cheeks…and in other places she’d rather they not be. She can tan…but she turns into a “lobster” first and it can be rather difficult for her to keep a tan once the winter months have begun.
Deirdre also has a beautiful voice. She grew up speaking Gaelic, but she mostly only sings it. In her own right, she’s an artist – a musician, a poet, and a singer. One of the first things people notice about Deirdre is her voice (she’s almost always singing something, especially when around Solan). Even though it’s not a physical trait, per se, her voice is one of her more defining characteristics.
One of Deirdre’s most stunning features are her blue eyes. On most days, when she’s in a good mood, they are a calm sort of “Caribbean blue.” But Deirdre’s moods can be determined by the color of her eyes – when angry, they turn a deep, flashing sort of blue. When thoughtful, they turn to an almost bluish-gray. When excited or focused on a goal, they turn a bright, ice blue. If one wanted to truly learn Deidre’s ways and moods, one would only have to watch her eyes to know her every mood and her every whim – for her, the eyes are truly the window to her soul.
