Reiki (Mystical, Mental, and Misc.; crosses over with Medical- barely)
This talent allows the character to subtly alter the flow of universal lifeforce energies to enable the one receiving the energies to bolster their own natural healing abilities. For some inexplicable reason, Reiki also seems to work just as well with mechanical constructs and machines, getting them to function and such, although no actual “healing” takes place in such cases (except, perhaps, for robotic PC’s) In game terms, a character receiving a Reiki treatment immediately gets an additional Endurance roll to fight off illness or sicknesses, or to recover lost health. On a yellow or red result, the character has kicked the illness completely out of their system and begins healing normally. On a green result, the tide of the illness has been turned, and the illness will be completely gone within 1-10 days, at which point they will begin normal healing. In the case of recovering from injuries, a red result indicates that the character recovers 1 rank of Endurance (if any ranks were lost) or ½ their Endurance rank as recovered Health. A Yellow result indicates that the character Endurance is stabilized from further rank losses, or they immediately recover 1/3 of their Endurance rank as Health. On a Green result, the character recovers ¼ their current Endurance Rank as Health. In any case, loss of Endurance Ranks is stopped by a successful Reiki treatment.
There are 3 degree levels to Reiki; each successive level costs the equivalent Karma for gaining a new Talent, although always at the Rate of learning it from someone “outside” the character’s group, regardless of who is doing the teaching. For starting Characters, each additional Talent Slot spent (up to 3 maximum- 1 for the Talent in the first place, +1/ each degree) grants another degree.
First Degree Reiki practitioners can do all the things listed above, but must be in close physical proximity to the one receiving the treatment.
Second Degree Reiki practitioners can do all the things listed above even at a distance, but require something as a focus, either a firm image of the person in their mind, or a photograph, or something similar.
Third Degree Reiki practitioners can do all of the above, as well as “awaken” the Reiki skill in others.
Reiki is a Psyche-based Talent. Each degree above first adds a +1 CS to the character’s Talent. Reiki requires full concentration; as such, the character using the Reiki Talent cannot perform any other actions in the same round as that in which they are giving a treatment, regardless of how many actions they might otherwise be entitled to.
If the optional Chi rules are being used, then Reiki Practitioners of any level automatically are aware of their own Chi, and on a successful check, the Chi in others- very basic things, such as “High/Low”, “Positive/Negative”, etc, but nothing that comes close to actual Chi-based Powers, although having the Reiki Talent can, in some circumstances, add bonuses to a character’s use of Chi-based powers.
When treating a character tainted by Negative Chi, a Reiki practitioner must first bring the character to Zero or positive Chi before any healing can take place. First Degree Practitioners do this at a rate of 1 point of Negative Chi/ 10 points of Psyche; Second Degree Practitioners at a rate of 1 point of Negative Chi/ 5 points of Psyche, and Third Degree Practitioners bring a Character with Negative Chi automatically to 1 Positive Chi with a successful Psyche check. Note: The Psyche score used is always that of the Practitioner, not that of the patient.
At the Judge’s option, Reiki may be half as effective or completely ineffective when used with Aliens (those not of the earth or of the earth’s dimension) or Robotic or Mechanical PC’s or NPC’s. Cyborgs should have no limitations, as they still do have some “human” parts to them as well.
