Hecate was half woman and half snake and the daughter of Zeus and Hera. Hecate incurred her mother's wraith by stealing rouge to give to Europa. "She fled to earth and hid in the house of a woman who had just been brought to bed with a child, contact with whom rendered Hecate impure." In order to remove this stain of impurity, she was sent to the Underworld where she gained authority and was called Prytania of the dead, or the Invincible Queen. "She presided over purifications and expiations and was the goddess of enchantments and magic charms. Hecate sent demons to the earth who tormented men and would appear at night accompanied by her retinue of infernal dogs. The places that she haunted most frequently were crossroads, or near tombs or the scenes of crimes." (The New Larousse Encyclopedia of Mythology)
Hecate was also the first creature to address Hellboy under his true name, Anung Un Rama. She first approached him at Castle Giurescu and accused him of losing his self amongst humans and making war against the members of his family. Hellboy stabbed her with a spear and threw her out of the castle.
She later returned to confront Rasputin for his repeated failure to control Hellboy and explained that she was bound to Hellboy. "When your [Rasputin's] Ragna Rok comes, he and I will pass into it together. Either we will rule over the world that is to come...or we will die. I don't know. I can't see that far" (The Conqueror Worm).
