Rather than create an idea purely based on my own thoughts I decided to plant a seed of creativity for members of the board to add to.
So No More Mutants!? The year is 2032 and gene therapy has become an accepted and widespread practise amongst the 'advanced' nations of the world.
Scientists have eliminated almost all biological defects that occur during natural impregnation and gestation. The vast majority of todays children are born 'perfect', no inherent health, mental or physical problems to affect their growth and development.
Certain unethical practioners have also been willing to program 'enhancements' into the children of rich and influential parents. These 'homo superiors' range from enhanced mental characteristics, greater physical strength or even natural 'beauties'.
There has even been partial progress into research and manipulation of the X-gene which many parents and their mutant children have found difficult to live with. Research to date allows the removal of this genetic defect from unborn foetuses and certain drug 'suppressants' have been developed to control the manisfestations of power in other 'sufferers'.
The result has been a massive drop in the birth of mutant super heroes and those who live with their talents almost live in fear of reprisal from covert government agencies, both foreign and domestic. The threat is so great that the mutant population has been driven underground and now look towards their own survival rather than acceptance with the rest of humanity.

Hmm... "Gattaca" meets the Marvel Universe... With similarities to the first story-arc from the reloaded "Astonishing X-Men" series as well...
*gears are turning*

What about the X-Men? You ask.
They've become scattered across the United States, many of them have fled to neighbouring countries and even across the sea to other continents. Many of them have become resistance leaders whilst some of them chose an easy life and now work for the agencies they once despised.
Charles Xavier is dead.
The most preciously guarded member of the mutant undeground is Xarion, a bio-genetic cyborg being of immense potential power. Herein lies the conciousness of Professor X, the undeveloped 'child' is an amalgamation of technology - that of mutant, cybernetics and enhanced computer technology - Cerebro.
If Xarion ever fell into the wrong hands . . .

Oh oh oh, My turn!!
The Avengers!!
Due the overwhelming ill popularity of Supers in general most of the Avengers have been disasembled, those who have superhuman powers. The rest (those highly trained and Hi Tech) have been pulled onto a special forces team that basically polices foreign countries and that is all, sort of like a banishment with pay.

Don't forget that not all superheroes powers are due to the X-gene. Some of these 'others' may be viewed with suspicion but would still be accepted in society. Those whose powers are purely based on technology (Ironman) and magic (Dr Strange) should still find everyday life 'easy'. You may find that many of these 'norms' would be sympathetic to the plight of their former mutant colleagues and may do everything in their power to protect them and/or influence public and governmental opinion.
