Mystic Lore
Powers: Hiro is a both a mutant and an Onmyo mystic, an individual gifted with the ability to summon and wield spiritual energies through the use of various medium, usually ofuda; paper slips with curses, wards, or inscriptions written on them. In Shintoism, ofuda are often tied to a tree or other tall object to summon good luck or ward off evil.
Mutation - Hiro's mutant ability is the power of psychometry. By touching an object, he can absorb and see the recent history surrounding it. Through concentration, he can try and see into the past or experience the thoughts or emotions of individuals who may have handled the object. Additionally, the power can be used to search for someone, by holding an object familiar to them. Obviously, the more familiar the object, the more effective the power's use becomes.
Postcognition: Typical (06)
Mystical Abilities - Hiro's connection with Dancing Rain (see history) grants him a preternatural, spiritual awareness of ghosts and spirits, provided that the spirit doesn't want to be seen.
Astral Detection: Good (10)
Through the use of ofuda, he can summon elemental forces; such as a gust of wind, lightning bolt, or fog. This ability depends on his use of ofuda and without them he cannot generate this power on his own.
Ofuda Magic: Mastery Level - Disciple of Onmyo-do
Can prepare, and carry, up to a maximum number of ofuda up to and including his Psyche rank value.
Limitation: Item - requires the use of special paper, ink and brushes.
Ritual - All items must be blessed in a ceremony when creating a new batch of ofuda.

History: Hiro was born in Hokkaido, the northern most of the four main Japan islands, at home in the snowy valleys and plains of Japan's dairyland. The younger of two sons of an accountant, Hiro grew up admiring his brother, Minoru, who was almost ten years his senior. The fact that Hiro wouldn't be the young powerhouse he is today if it were not for his brother is both destiny and tragedy.
While Hiro played in elementary school, his brother fell into the neo-Yazuka gangs as a teenager, despite his families efforts at curbing the unusually rebellious youth. Eventually, Minoru walked out on his family, abandoning his little brother for the Japanese underground. He would not return until nearly two years later, when he murdered his parents while high on PCP. Having run out of money, in need of drugs, and chased by debts, Minoru had come back for items which he might trade or pawn for the money that he needed.
One of the items he was searching for was an ancient Chinese broadsword that had been a wedding gift from Kaoru's father. The sword, which was called Dancing Rain in Mandarin Chinese, had been in the family for ages, supposedly since the Chinese originally migrated to the Japanese islands, displacing the native Ainu tribes. It was only by chance that Hiro stumbled across the dust-covered piece, which had been placed in the back of the attic, where he was hiding from his murderous sibling.
Upon contact with the sword, Hiro's psychometry power activated for the first time in a sensory overload of sensation, sound, and imagery. He blacked out; but when he awoke, he found he was no longer in his house and was splattered with blood, with someone's severed finger in his lap no less. It was then that Dancing Rain spoke for the first time.
The original owner and wielder of the sword, Dancing Rain is the spirit of the Shaolin monk who had been murdered with his own blade centuries ago in mainland China, presumably by no less than one of Hiro's own ancestors (the sword was in his family's possession after all). Dancing Rain told the boy that he had used the sword to fight off Minoru, cutting off one of the finger's on his hand in the process.
The spirit of Dancing Rain is assimilated into Hiro's own consciousness, as the ghost now possesses the child's body. As such, Hiro can see and speak with the ghost, and may appear to be talking to himself. This assimilation grants no unique abilities, other than that Hiro is starting to learn how to wield the sword through muscle memory and can now read old Mandarin.
Orphaned, frustrated, and confused, Hiro decided to leave Japan, with the help of Dancing Rain, though he debates returning as he could use the finger to track down his brother and finish their fight... though, part of him longs to see his brother dead and the other wants to see his brother live (he is, after all, his brother). He also fears that Japanese authorities would place him in a group orphanage where, at best, he'd be placed under psychiatric care if it was discovered that he saw things and spoke with a ghost that lived in his head.
In the meantime, he wanders... looking for ways that he can put his newfound powers to some good use (hopefully bashing a few heads in the process, as the boy has volumes of anger and other emotions to vent).
Physical Description: Hiro is of average height for Japanese, though small for his age by American standards. He has light brown hair instead of the stereotypical jet black due to Ainu blood in his family background. Due to the fact that the Japanese learn English starting in the earliest grade of school, Hiro can read and understand a fair amount, so long as the speaker talks slowly. Because he hasn't had a great deal of practice speaking English, however, he can understand more than listeners of his speech may think possible. It should be noted, however, that Hiro speaks what is often called Engrish, due to the limited Japanese phoenetic structure, he's unable to pronounce things like the letter "L" and often changes the ending of words with a consonant ending to a vowel ending (e.g. Hot-o instead of hot).
