Spontaneous Power Stunts is a house rule which I have used in the past in my tabletop games.
Essentially what that is is the powers more-or-less flaring up or reacting to some stimuli in a previously unforeseen manner, initiated by the Judge, many times as a plot hook or device, sometimes simply to add a bit of randomness and fun to the game ("Sheesh Joe, I didn't know your plasma generation power could short-circuit that guy's power suit!"... "Yeah well, neither did I...") There are always so many different variables and circumstances in any given scenario; Spontaneous Power Stunts is an attempt to capture that unpredictable flavor that is turns up so often in the comics.
As far as rules goes...
1) Spontaneous Power Stunts do not cost any Karma, as they are Judge- initiated as opposed to Player initiated. (however, see 3 below)
2) Spontaneous Power Stunts, as a general rule, do not count for "possible power stunts" or "successful power stunts" that the character may have, being more-or-less one-shot deals.
3) Players have the option after the fact of saying, "Hey, that was cool, I want that permanently", in which case the 100 Karma is spent as per normal PS rules, in which case it is treated as a successful power stunt with 1 out of 10 successes.
4) As usual, Power Ranks for all said stunts are determined by the Judge.
5) A player's reaction to a Spontaneous Power Stunt can result in an immediate RP Karma bonus or Humor Award, as warranted.
All that having been said...
If there is anyone who would absolutely, totally NOT want there to be any Spontaneous Power Stunts for their characters, please leave a short reply in this thread to that fact. If I don't hear anything, I'll just have to assume everyone is in agreement.
Thanks!
