Role-Playing Notes:
Physical Features:
Since his mutation kicked in, Kevin has quite honestly been “built-like-a-brick”. Possessing a physique similar to that of most body builders, professional wrestlers, and action movie stars, Kevin is an imposing figure at 6’4”.
Clothes:
Kevin tends to wear mostly contemporary casual garb; t-shirts, sweeters, jackets, etc… of varying styles and colors. He’s not entirely prone to fashion trends or fads though, and tends to buy his cloths as haphazardly as the next guy. Kevin has updated his great-uncles costume to not look as campy… the blue outfit still looks a bit old school though.
Personality:
Kevin is a free-spirited and somewhat carefree person. For an pseudo-espionage agent he’s about as close to perky as you can get. He general speaks his mind whenever a though jumps in his head… no matter how silly the thought… and is considered a bit of a clown.
Home Town:
Libby, Montana
Languages:
Speaks English
Strengths:
Kevin is optimistic and strong-willed… in a cocky sort of way. He rarely gives in to doubt and never gives up. Kenneth has the legacy of his great-uncle supporting his reputation in the Agency.
Weaknesses:
Innate Weaknesses:
*Solar powered: Kevin requires exposure to sunlight to sustain his metahuman prowess. Without exposure to solar energy at the very least indirectly (moonlight, starlight will work), he will transform back into a normal person (his body resistance and hyper-running will cease to function and all his primary abilities will drop to Typical). He begins losing his enhanced abilities after roughly a half and hour without sunlight. He remains weakened until exposed to sunlight again for at least a half an hour. For this same reason it is unwise for Kevin to remain invisible over long periods of time, as the power prevents light absorption.
*Shadow Vunerability: Kevin recently discovered he is not completely impervious to damage. By their very nature shadow-shaped weapons and darkforce bolts bypass Kevin’s Body Resistance entirely.
*Selenium Allergy: Not a true weakness, just annoying. Selenium based products, like many shampoos cause Kevin to break-out in rashes. The light absorbing/converting properties of selenium apparently irritate Kevin’s own light absorption.
Equipment Weaknesses:
*Recharging – A minor weakness, Kevin’s equipment needs to be recharged for a least an hour daily or it will lose functionality. Missions requiring multiple days or weeks in field typically include Kevin being assigned a portable recharger.
Family:
Father – Jason Thunder (43); Mother – Jessica Harper-Thunder (39); Sue Thunder (16), Aunt – Rebecca Moore (40), Uncle – John Moore (46)
History:
Vanguard is just a random genetic misfit that happened upon the legacy of a golden age hero. Kevin’s great-uncle was Jude Thunder, the WWII super-agent known as the Invisible Man. Unbeknownst today to all but a few aged intelligence agents and Kevin’s Aunt was the fact that Jude’s powers had never been inherent to him. Jude was a physicist working on the Manhattan project when he stumbled upon the unique extra-dimensional radiation that he would use to create the I-Man costume. After retiring he stored the costume unceremoniously in his attic closet. The location of the suit and the knowledge of his secret identity was passed on to his son and later his granddaughter, Kevin’s Aunt. When Jude passed on, it was assumed the suit would simply remain a secret heirloom of the family for generations to come.
The call of adventure was not done with the Thunder family however, as around the time of Kevin’s sixteenth birthday… he lapsed into a month long coma. The comatose state was physically brought on by his body internally augmenting do to a mutation that had lied dormant throughout Kevin’s formative years. Upon awakening, Kevin quickly discovered that he now possessed astounding physical might, speed, and near indestructibility. Unfortunately, the doctors realized Kevin’s situation with equal speed, and his mutant status was leaked to the authorities promptly. It was set to be media disaster...
Thus in no time at all, Agency X came knocking, with a full cover-up story prepared. When Kevin’s aunt heard that he was thinking of joining a clandestine government agency for superhumans, she immediately pulled her grandfather’s gear out of mothballs. Though she believed Kevin’s natural gifts would be enough to keep him safe, she took the reentry of the Thunder family into the spy-biz as a sign that maybe the legacy of the Invisible Man wasn’t quite at its end. Thus “I-Man II” was born.
It should be further noted that Kevin has since disbanded with the name I-Man out of respect for his great-uncle. Kevin recognizes his control over his ancestor’s devices is woefully lacking and referring to himself with the same name as the legendary wartime superhero was just wrong. Taking his strength, invulnerability, and ability to project force fields to protect others into account… Kevin has chosen the name Vanguard as his current alias. He’s been with the Agency almost five years now.
Vehicles:
The “I-Cycle”, a campy aesthetically refitted 1950s chopper made with materials that allow it to turn invisible with the rider and tires that maintain traction on force field surfaces (Kevin doesn’t have that stunt). Kevin doesn’t know how to ride it and with his natural hyper-running doesn’t really need it. Still, it came with the suit and sits covered in a tarp at Agency X.
Mustang Convertible (2000 model) – Gift from his dad on his sixteenth birthday, drives when not in heroic persona.
Relationships:
He is not currently involved in any romantic relationships. He keeps in touch with some of his high school friends from time-to-time and has a few friends at the Agency and on campus (he’s a senior at NYU now), including a few of the true old-timers who still remember I-Man from the old days. He has an extended family that he has occasional contact with when work allows (always on holidays at least).
*Story Modified, still working on power adjustments.
