Located in Fairfield, Connecticut (although other branches exist throughout the world), The B.P.R.D. was founded in 1944 by Professor Trevor Bruttenhom and an international collective. The B.P.R.D. was created in reaction to the Nazis' occult experiments. Its current purpose is to monitor, investigate and contain supernatural events worldwide. That said, the B.P.R.D. is both a research and defense agency. After Professor Bruttenhom's death, the B.P.R.D. fell under the direction of Dr. Tom Manning.
Dr. Tom Manning (played by Jeffrey Tambor in the film adaptation), current director of the B.P.R.D. In many ways, Manning represents a "corporatization" of the B.P.R.D. and struggles with himself to do more than to treat many of the B.P.R.D.'s special agents as pets.
Dr. Kate Corrigan, a professor at New York University and author of sixteen books on folklore and occult history, most notably The Confessions of Isobel Gowdie, has been a consultant to the B.P.R.D. and friend to Hellboy since 1984. She was also the last member of the B.P.R.D. to speak to Hellboy before his departure. Hellboy told her that he was going to Africa to begin a search for his true origins.
Hellboy (played by Ron Perlman in the film adaptation) is the self-proclaimed "world's greatest paranormal investigator". His true name is Anung Un Rama. The two discs on his forehead are the broken remains of horns that manifest themselves whenever Hellboy is in the presence of certain supernatural powers that want him to realize his intended potential. He carries various charms and talismans in the pockets of his trench coat. While trained to use a pistol, in recent years Hellboy has eschewed it entirely for the dependability of his fists. Most notably, his right hand is permanently held inside a stone glove.
He was brought to earth by the Nazis as a part of "Project Ragna Rok" and was intended to be a servant of Rasputin. Together they would watch the apocalypse. Instead of appearing on earth in the arms of the Nazis, Hellboy appeared in a church in East Bromwich, England and taken into the custody of the B.P.R.D. It's then direction, Professor Bruttenholm, took custody of Hellboy and became his mentor. In the mid-nineties, Hellboy came face-to-face with Rasputin for the first time and rejected his role as the apocalypse-bringer.
While Hellboy preferred to not consider the Nazi involvement in his appearance on earth, his meeting with Rasputin forced him to ponder his origins. After fighting with Hecate in Castle Giurescu, Hellboy learned that his true name was Anung Un Rama and that "his kin were ancient spirits of the air, the mountains, streams, and pools; old gods of graves and shadows and demons of hell...witches, striges, vampir...ghosts come forth from their tombs" (Wake the Devil). Hecate also accused him of making war on his family by consorting with humanity. He responded to this information with his usual aplomb and impaled Hecate on a spear.
Hellboy later learned from the Women of Thessaly that he was brought to earth to unleash Ogdru-Jahad and set forth the cleansing of mankind from the earth. Upon learning this, Hellboy sprouted two giant horns from his head. He was given two choices: unleash Ogdru-Jahad or unlock the key in his right hand and open the pit. Hellboy chose a third option, that being: "It's my d**n life, Ill do what I want with it!" (Wake the Devil). He broke the horns off of his head and thusly broke free from his part in the prophecy of doom.
A few years later, Hellboy and Roger the Homunculus were sent to investigate a disturbance at Hunte Castle in Austria. While there Hellboy met with an alien creature that, in the pose of a human being, had been present at Hellboy's "birth". Before dying of wounds inflicted upon him by the Nazis, the alien gave Hellboy a tool to help defeat the schemes of Herman von Krupt and Ernst Oeming. The alien also told Hellboy that, "To be other than human does not necessarily mean to be less" (The Conqueror Worm).
After defeating the Conqueror Worm, Hellboy quit the B.P.R.D. He was sickened by Dr. Manning's insistence that a bomb be placed inside Roger, but more important than that, Hellboy wanted to learn more about his part in the apocalypse and his "Right Hand of Doom". He spoke briefly with Dr. Kate Corrigan and then set off for Africa.
While in Africa, Hellboy was taken captive by the Bog Roosh who sought to not only destroy him but to completely unmake him. Then place his right hand into the body of the oldest living creature on earth, a whale, which would carry the hand until its death. At which point the whale would sink into the Pit of Urr thus negating Hellboy's power forever. While Hellboy managed to escape from the Bog Roosh, he was last seen floating at the bottom of the ocean.
Roger the Homunculus was discovered by Liz Sherman and a team of B.P.R.D. field agents in Romania in the ruins of Czege Castle, 279 miles from Castle Giurescu. Roger was discovered in a dormant state. A homunculus can be easily described as an experiment in medieval cloning, a test-tube baby as it were. They're made from blood and herbs, and incubated in a jar of horse manure. What's most remarkable about Roger is that he is the size of an adult human male, whereas most homunculi are little more than a foot tall.
He was created, presumably, by Theophrastus Bombast von Hohenheim Paracelsus who brought Roger to life by growing his body from roots and a having him by lightning. The affects of the lightning bolt sustained Roger for only a short period of time, after which he gradually lost his strength and fell into a dormant, dreamlike state, where he remained for centuries. Roger recalled his creator as a thoughtful caregiver.
Roger was awakened when Liz Sherman ignited a fire in a hole on Roger's chest cavity. He inadvertently siphoned energy from Liz and left her without the use of her pyrotechnic powers. The shock of being brought back to life caused Roger to go on a rampage that cost the life of one B.P.R.D. field agent. After regaining his senses, Roger felt intense remorse for the pain he'd cost. A chance encounter with his older brother brought Roger into contact with Hellboy. Hellboy assisted Roger in subduing the plans of his psychotic and vengeful older brother and was then brought to the hospital to visit Liz Sherman. Roger returned the energy he'd siphoned off of her thus restoring her to life and he himself fell back into his dormant state.
After being outfitted with a personal generator, Roger became a member of the B.P.R.D. and was affectionately named Roger by Hellboy. In order to make certain that Roger did not go on a rampage again, the B.P.R.D. temporarily outfitted him with a bomb that could be triggered by a remote control. The remote was entrusted to Hellboy who had enough faith in Roger's character to dispose of the bomb. Roger proved himself later by absorbing the power of the Conqueror Worm and saving humankind from extinction. After Hellboy's departure from the B.P.R.D., Roger worked closely with Abe Sapien and Dr. Kate Corrigan on numerous cases.
Abraham Sapien (played by Doug Jones and voiced by David Hyde Pierce in the film adaptation) is not his real name. Abe was discovered in the basement of St. Trinian's Hospital in Washington, D.C. by a group of plumbers who had broken open a sealed door. Abe was found hibernating in a tube of water with little else to explain his existence than a note pinned near the tube that read, "Icthyo Sapien, April 14, 1865". 1865 is the same date as President Abraham Lincoln's assassination.
Abe has a set of gills on his neck and is covered in green and gray scales. While he can remain on dry land for an unspecified period of time, he is most comfortable in large bodies of water. Abe is one of Hellboy's closest friends and has a genial and inquisitive manner. He often dreams of fish.
Abe has time and again proved to be Hellboy's closest friend in the B.P.R.D. After Hellboy's departure, Abe contemplated breaking off as well but was convinced to stay and soon began working closely together with Roger the Homunculus and Dr. Kate Corrigan on numerous cases.
Elizabeth Sherman (played by Selma Blair in the film adaptation) was born in Kansas City, Kansas on 15 April 1962. At the age of 11 she had the first manifestation of pyrotechnic powers. The resulting fire leveled one city block and killed thirty-two people including three firefighters, her parents and brother. In 1974, Liz became an official ward of the B.P.R.D. where she learned to control her pyrotechnic abilities. She's quit the B.P.R.D. an estimated thirteen times and has always come back. She temporarily lost her powers and went into shock after awakening Roger the Homunculus in Romania. Shortly, thereafter Roger was captured and convinced to return the energy he'd stolen to Liz thus restoring her health.
