"Project Ragna Rok", also known as The Final Destiny, was one of Hitler's many Doomsday projects initiated before the closing days of World War II. A report by the B.P.R.D. noted that the project was headed by General Klaus Werner von Krupt and based on Termagent Island in Scotland. The second goal of Project Ragna Rok was to "instigate the fall of man".
General Klaus Werner von Krupt was in charge of administering Project Ragna Rok. Shortly after this project's presumed failure, Von Krupt was committed to Eisenvalt Sanitarium, where he died six months later from a bodily infestation of beetles.
Leopold Kurtz disappeared after the initial failure of Project Ragna Rok. He resurfaced at a castle on the Arctic Circle in the 1990s, where he'd been cryogenically frozen with Ilsa Haupstein and Professor Kroenen. Before going into hiding, Kurtz offered his services and faith to Rasputin. Kurtz and Kroenen worked together in Norway on the rejuvenated "Project Ragna Rok" seeking to create an army. He opposed Kroenen's idea to bring Professor Herman von Klempt into their schemes to unleash Ogdru-Jahad on the Earth. He met with death at the hands of Kroenen.
Ilsa Haupstein (played by Biddy Hopstein in the film adaptation) disappeared after the initial failure of Project Ragna Rok. She resurfaced at a castle on the Arctic Circle in the 1990s, where she'd been in cryogenically frozen with Leopold Kurtz and Professor Kroenen. Before going into hiding, Haupstein offered her services and faith to Rasputin. She willingly sacrificed herself to an iron maiden that was given to Rasputin by the Baba Yaga, the purpose being to help empower Vladimir Giurescu. The iron maiden then became a part of Hecate.
Professor Doctor Karl Ruprect Kroenen disappeared after the initial failure of Project Ragna Rok. For reasons that are unknown, Professor Kroenen was forced to live out his life wearing a metal helmet over his head and face. He resurfaced at a castle on the Arctic Circle in the 1990s where he'd been in cryogenically frozen Ilsa Haupstein and Professor Kroenen. Before going into hiding, Professor Kroenen offered his services and faith to Rasputin. He was killed in an explosion in Norway.
Grigori Rasputin (played by Karel Roden in the film adaptation), known as "The Mad Monk," was instructed by the serpent-god Ogdru-Jahad and seven beasts to bring destruction to the world. His initial goal was to bring Hellboy to Earth and stand together at Ragna Rok, but upon first meeting him, Hellboy shot Rasputin in the face.
While still a young man, Rasputin called to God to help him. God was silent, but the Baba Yaga was not. The Baba Yaga told Rasputin that the fates had chosen him to be their agent and the father of the new millennium. In exchange for this information, Rasputin gave her one half of his soul, which she then hid in the roots of Yggdrasil, the world tree, "so that his spirit would always be safe".
He then secured a position of influence in the Russian royal family and waited for a sign. That sign came in the form of the Russian Prince Felix Yussupov, who attempted to kill Rasputin by first poisoning him, then shooting him and finally hurling him into the frozen Neva River. It was in those waters that the Ogdu-Jahad first called Rasputin and filled his head with the vision of a world transformed by fire and bade him to preside over the fall of mankind.
Shortly after being contacted by the Ogdu-Jahad, Rasputin made his way to a secluded town in Italy, where he lived in complete isolation for twenty years and prepared himself for the coming Ragna Rok. Rasputin awaited a new sign that took the form of a meeting with the Nazi Heinrich Himmler, who then introduced Rasputin to Adolph Hitler. Rasputin saw Hitler as a "small, doomed madman. But a madman in whose doom [he] saw a chance to harness unlimited resources". Through Hitler, Rasputin became a guiding force of "Project Ragna Rok".
Using astrology to calculate the place, and numerology to calculate the time, Rasputin led "Project Ragna Rok" to Stonehenge, where he succeeded in bringing Anung Un Rama to earth. Unfortunately for the Nazis, Anung Un Rama landed safely in the hands of the Allied Forces. "Project Ragna Rok" was deemed a failure and subsequently disbanded. Rasputin, however, knew that he'd succeeded at his attempts. He knew that something that been conjured to the earth from the worlds beyond.
Before he could investigate further, the Nazi Empire began to crumble. Germany was destroyed. Hitler, Himmler, all the rest were dead. While his remaining associates fled to all parts of the globe, Rasputin was left completely and utterly alone. At that point, he was bade by the silent voices that had long since guided him to head north into the Arctic wastes where he rested in a trance-like state at the foot of a statue of the Sadu-Hem built by the first race of men. It was there that Rasputin became aware of the Seven Beasts: Amon-Jahad, Adad-Jahad, Nunn-Jahad, Irra-Jahad, Belili-Jahad, Nergal-Jahad, Namrat-Jahad.
Rasputin was awakened years later by the touch of Professor Bruttenholm. He then set out to confront Hellboy and awaken the Seven Beasts. His plan was foiled by the B.P.R.D. Before being separated from his human form, Rasputin offered Hellboy the secrets of his origin and potential. He was rejected and subsequently destroyed.
His spirit later returned to guide Ilsa Haupstein, Leopold Kurtz and Professor Kroenen to resurrect the vampire Vladimir Giurescu. The mission was a failure and afterwards, Rasputin went into hiding at the home of the Baba Yaga. He later was confronted by Hecate who chastised him for being a failure and then destroyed him. What little was left of him, the Baba Yaga put into a nut shell so she could keep him close to her heart forever.
