(Ok, granted- this has only limited applications for Super-heroics, but it IS equipment...)
For Marvel Super- Heroes
Sparring Gear- Every now and again, heros and normal folks trained in various forms of hand to hand combat need to practice their skills in order to keep these skills in peak training condition. While some prefer to do this without the use of any sort of protective gear, the conscientious Hero (not wanting to splatter his partners all over the countryside) dons his Sparring Gear.
Sparring Gear is essentially light protective gear designed to both protect from the impact of blows received and to soften the force of blows given in terms of damaged dealt (not necessarily effect). This can take a variety of forms, from simple gauntlet-like gloves and boots to helmet-like headgear to full suits resembling body armor. Sparring Gear is light weight, but somewhat bulky, being made primarily of poly-foam padding with plastic or vinyl coverings. *Note* Sparring Gear gloves are NOT the same as Boxing Gloves.
The Sparring Gear itself provides Feeble (2) Body Armor against Blunt Attacks (BA) only. While it helps to cushion the blows received, it does nothing to protect the character from Stun or Slam effects, aside from whatever Body Armor protection might be normally afforded (such as being Slammed into a wall, for example). When wearing Sparring Gear on the hands and feet, attacks made with these appendages are considered -1CS for damage purposes only. Fighting ability is not adjusted in any means; The damage dealt, however, is.
Example: Joe's character gets punched in the face during sparring practice by an opponent with Good(10) Strength. Usually this would mean 10 points of damage, but fortunately Joe had the foresight to insist on both partners wearing protective gear. The blow itself is reduced from Good(10) to Typical(6) since his opponent is wearing Sparring Gauntlets; Joe's headgear provides him with FE(2) Body Armor, reducing the actual damage received to 4. It still smarts, nonetheless, but at least nothing is broken. Had Joe gotten hit with a body-blow where he is not proteced, he would have taken 6 points of damage.
In the case of those who opt for full-body suits of protective Sparring Gear, the bulky nature of the gear imposes a -1CS penalty to any Agility, Tumbling, or Acrobatic FEATs.
A similar piece of "equipment" is padded mats, used usually on the floors, and sometimes including the walls (and in peculiar cases, the cielings as well). These also help to soften impact, taking an additional -1CS off of the damage done by any who might crash into them by whatever means.
Cost for "standard" Sparring Gear is Poor (gloves, boots, helmet).
Cost for a "full body suit" of Sparring Gear is Good.
Cost for padded mats is Good: This covers 1 indoor area of floor; walls not included.
