SCENARIO: THE DECEPTION DEVICE
"All warfare is based on deception." - Sun Tzu.
THE CATASTROPHE:
In an accident reminiscent of the 2000 Kursk incident, the Russian Navy loses a Typhoon class nuclear submarine at sea. The TK23 Zhukov goes down with all hands lost, along with 20 RSM-52 ICBM's. The Zhukov's home port can be Vladvostok (Pacific) or Severodvinsk (Arctic) whichever is suits the campaign best.
The official story is that an experimental supercavitating torpedo (capable of travelling at over 600 knots!) prematurely detonated in the tube, but the truth is much worse. The Zhukov was testing a dimensional stealth system designed to make the submarine phase out of reality, rendering it undetectable to all sensors.
Much like the United States Navy's legendary Philedelphia Experiment in 1943, the Zhukov's experimental Maskirovka (deception) Device caused massive interdimensional trauma to it's crew, possibly leading to the creation of new superhumans, and certainly killing hundreds.
Now the wreckage of the Zhukov lays at the bottom of the sea... and the interdimensional energies of the Maskirovka Device have ripped a gaping hole in the universe. This wound in Space/Time grows and grows like an infected pustule. Russian scientists calculate that in a few weeks, it will consume the Earth and all nearby stellar objects, perhaps to the range of Barnard's Star some six light years hence.
THE HOOK:
This scenario is ideal for Russian heros such as the Red Guardian, Black Widow, Darkstar, Colossus, or even the Abomination. Some PC's may wish to generate new characters made superhuman from the Maskirovka Device. The heroes will have to content with bureaucratic secrecy and interference (are they even informed of the potential danger?), alien horrors emerging from the beyond, and the hostile undersea environment. The warheads must be recovered if possible, converging foreign fleets must be dodged, and the world must be saved.
THE RESOLUTION:
A Latverian representative delivers three strategic Electron Warheads from the arsenal of Doom. The envoy claims that the immense electromagnetic discharge from the warheads will alter and counteract the interdimensional radiations and close the hole. Do the heros dare trust the technology of Doom?
