HISTORY:
Michael was born on a reservation ("The Rez'", as he calls it) which was unfortunately located downstream of a Uranium processing facility. When he was 5 years old, both his parents succumbed to cancer, caused by the radiation in the drinking water. Soon thereafter, the facility was closed down, but not before half the tribe had been exposed to hazardous radiation. He went to live with his maternal grandfather, an elder for the tribe who lived off in semi-seclusion, who was also rumored to be a strong Medicine Man. At an early age he started learning the traditional songs, chants, and dances of his tribe, a "hobby" which he has kept up, and by the time he was an adolescent, he was already winning prize money at different pow-wows. It was on the Pow-Wow Circuit that he first met and fell in love with Dani Moonstar, the New Mutant known as Mirage. (It should be noted that she is only vaguely aware of his affections, and as of yet there has been no real romatic involvement.) His mutant powers first manifested when he was on his Vision Quest, which led him to believe that he had been chosen by the "Grandfather Spirits" to be a protector for his tribe. In his late teens/ early twenties, he became acquainted with and recruited by ARM (the Aboriginal Rights Movement), a rather militant Indians rights group. When they realized his special abilities, they tried to capitalize on them by sending him on a "mission" to plant a bomb in a factory built neighboring Indian land. Unknown to Michael, the factory was not empty that night, but rather the foreman and his 7-year old daughter were there after hours. The bomb had already been planted and they were leaving when Michael heard the child's laughter echoing inside the building. He tried to convince his cohorts to deactivate the bomb, but they refused, so he ran inside to try and rescue the people inside. He realized when he got in there that there was not enough time to search out the people inside, so instead he grabbed the bomb and ran out into the desert, where it exploded. Fortunately, his mutant powers saved his life, but he was rendered comatose for three months afterwards. After his wounds had completely healed, he severed all ties with his former "friends" and went back to the Rez'. A few years later, he was returning from town to see a group of ruffians making trouble with an Indian woman whose car had been run off the road. He quickly rushed to the scene to try and save the woman, and then realized the she didn't need his help after all- The "helpless woman" the ruffians had picked to create trouble with was none other than Mirage. They went back to his cabin, where she told him of the reason why she was there- that Cerebro had picked him out as being a Mutant, and that Professor X felt that he could help Michael learn to control his powers. Michael was speechless and told her that he needed some time to think about things- it was all too much at once; first, Dani "coming back into his life", then the whole "by the way, you're a mutant", and "oh yeah, so am I". In time, he learned to come to grips with these revelations, and went to Xavier's where he was trained in using his Mutant Powers. During this entire time, although he was closer to Dani than he ever had been before, he still couldn't get up the nerve to ask her out (although his infatuation was blatantly obvious to everyone else). Then one day the phone call came to say that his grandfather was ill, and Michael returned to the Rez', where he has remained ever since.
