Powers: Amy has the power to call upon the spirits of the ancient Amazons, and their goddess Athena, whose blood — although diluted with the many generations between — flows in her veins. It is when she summons forth this power that she transforms from little girl to Amazon warrioress with strength far beyond mortal man (and even mortal women).
The Sword of Ephesus — The sword carried by Amazon, this weapon was originally believed to be purely ornamental, its construction useless in combat. The archeologists who discovered it or Amy's parents, who studied its mysteries, could never have guessed that it bore a powerful enchantment which was just waiting for the proper wielder to claim it. A blade of pure silver mounted in a hilt of gold, it practically glows with mystic energy now that it is active, but before it bonded with Amy, it's curious duality had left many scholars of the ancient Greeks entirely stumped.
At the heart of the confusion was that one side of the weapon was decorated in apparent honour to the goddess Athena, while the other to the goddess Artemis. While a large turquoise capped the pommel (one of the few commonalities between the two goddesses), one side of the hilt is embedded with a pair of rubies and a star sapphire while the other sparkles with two diamonds and a moonstone. This evidence of double worship continues on the blade with each side bearing engravings honouring one of the goddesses. On each side, immediately above the hilt's cross-guard is a design representing a dove (another common emblem for the two), but that is the extent of the similarities, with much of the remaining being near opposites.
On Athena's side, intricate designs begin at the hilt with a cat's eye, an owl and an eagle flanking each other above that, then a sun emblem and a pair of intertwined snakes reaching to the tip. On the side dedicated to Artemis, the details begin with the dove, then a dogs face, howling, followed by a bear and horse which face each other, a crescent moon and intertwined honeysuckle and thistle plants extending the remaining length of the blade.
Mystically sharp and double-edged, the sword can cut through virtually anything, from flesh to solid steel, if sufficient force is put behind the swing (which is generally not a problem for her to provide). Thus far the weapon has also proven indestructible and it is unknown whether anything can actually bend or break it. Regardless, it never notches in combat and has been used as a pry bar in several cases.
As Amy — Nothing really special about her, she's a pretty typical pre-teen, although she has a lot of potential on the upside. Physically fit, she's still not very strong and not much of a fighter, but she is pretty quick and can be hard to get a hold of (much like any kid, really). She is rather intelligent and has great problem solving skills for her age, but in terms of knowledge, she's not very worldly. The only thing outwardly extraordinary about her is that she does tend to heal very quickly, though not to the degree to which Amazon can. She also has an exceptionally active metabolism, meaning she can (and does) eat like a horse and not gain a pound, presumably a side-effect of her transformation process.
The Transformation — Although mystically based and granted through contact with the sword she carries as Amazon, it is part of the transformation and has already done its work. In fact, the sword now only appears when she has transformed and vanishes when she reverts to her true form (even if she's not holding it at the time). As Amazon, she always appears dressed in a studded leather outfit which reveals quite a bit, but is obviously a warrior's garb. The clothes, like the sword, can be dropped/removed, but vanish should she revert to her natural form. Should she put on some kind other clothing, either on top of or in place of her normal clothes, they would not vanish and she'd still be wearing them, though they'd likely not fit very well at all. Additionally, anything she was wearing before transforming to Amazon is still worn when she reverts back (so no trying to put on the coveralls before shifting, they'd just disappear too, until she changed back).
The transformation itself comes in the form of a soft, blue-green light which momentarily hides her from sight and brief, but strong winds which swirl around her. As the light and wind fades away, Amazon stands where the child once had. The childlike beauty of her natural form is greatly intensified in her adult body, showing the pinnacle of what she could be — very definitely of super-model quality. Shifting back is similar, but has only the light, not the winds.
While in her Amazon form, she requires no food or drink (although she is certainly able to do so) at all and even no need for sleep, however, when she reverts to her mortal form she must make up the difference. Very often, when she has held her Amazon form for more than a day, finds herself completely overcome by weariness and will pass out immediately upon returning to her true form, awakening after several hours with a ravenous appetite (unless she actually did eat as Amazon, in which case she'll only be "really hungry"). Also, after a day or so in her Amazon form, she begins getting increasingly painful headaches. While she doesn't physically tire, her mind grows more and more weary until the pain becomes unbearable and she has to shift back. Thus far she has not been able to hold the form for three full days, though this may become less a problem as she ages.
The Powers of Amazon
Physical Powerhouse — Physically speaking, she's nearly a goddess in her Amazon form. Her speed and agility rank up with Olympic-level athletes — impressive, indeed, but not superhuman — and she is the very height of grace in all her movements. Her strength and endurance, however, are very much beyond mortal capabilities. She is extremely strong and can deal devastating blows, lift an extraordinary amount of weight, as well as jump more than ten feet off the ground from a standing position.
Healing — Able to run incredible distances without getting winded, her body is somewhat damage resistant and she neither bruises nor cuts easily. She's not bullet-proof, but close to it. Added to this is a remarkable healing factor which can repair damage which is done at a rapid rate. While far from indestructible, it does make her a very difficult opponent to bring down.
Natural Fighting Ability — While in her Amazon persona, Amy is able to use virtually any melee weapon with skill and competence, purely on an instinctual level. Her specialty, not surprisingly, is with swords. She is a master swordswoman, on par with the greatest Earth has to offer, and could be quite lethal if she had the heart for it. She would also prove very effective with a bow, but has not yet had the opportunity to discover this. This instinctual fighting ability also makes her a more than proficient unarmed combatant and while she doesn't use any particular style of martial arts she does (bearing in mind that there's still an eleven year old girl in there) watch a lot of TV and her fighting tends to be pretty flashy. Still, thanks to her skill and physical capabilities, she manages to make it work rather effectively.
